Silver Newfies
« on: April 29, 2005, 08:44:15 am »
I've obviously seen a lot of Black Newfs, quite a few Landseers and plenty of Browns, but does anyone here have a Silver Newf or even know of any?  I haven't seen any at the dog shows I have been to and I haven't even seen a picture of one, but I know they exist.  I recently did a logo for the NCNC Health & Rescue:

http://www.ncnc.org/Rescue/rescue.htm

They wanted me to put all the varieties of Newfs in it and I had to just guess what the silver looked like.  I guessing it isn't as light colored as I made it, that was because I didn't want it to blend with the Black.  They probably are just a bit lighter than a Black.  Can anyone enlighten me?  Pics would be great too!!!!!!!!!

I've read about them on the Newf health website through Yahoo.  They are also called greys or pewters.  They really are more a dark pewter color and, according to that website, there was some discussion about whether or not they had more skin/fur issues than the other colors.  I think that is the reason they are more rare than the other colors.

Yeah, I have heard them called Greys too.  It would be interesting to see one next to a Black.  So it might be a skin issue?  Interesting... ....   Probably a side product of a Newfie Mix as well.

Newflvr was right, they are called Grays.  This site below gave me the most straightforwar d description of the dogs and a bit of background info on Newfies as well.  It's always nice to get more info on them.

I still haven't been able to find a definitive picture of a Gray online though.  I would be cool to see one!!!

Well I found there was a silver newf entered at naionals last week in calif.  so they must be recognized by akc.  I also know a breeder who's opinoin was that the silver is a freak gene, they have tremendous skin problems and the ears turn leathery as they age.  It is something that a breeder avoids.

Newfs are so adorable, my friend has one and I can't stop hugging him, he is so cuddly.  I have never seen a silver one before.

Jen, you are right, there was a Grey Newf at the Specialty and I got a picture of her.  I will post my all my pics from last weekend tonight when I get home.  They are a genetic freak of sorts, not the best or healthiest dog to own, big risk of a sad, sad ending.  Like most dogs, when you start getting into sub-breeds, things can get messy.  Even Browns and Landseers are more at risk for hip, heart and skin problems, but it's not a guarantee.  I have seen many health problem-free dogs of both types.

If any of you didn't see this in my other pics, this was a beautiful Gray Newf that I had the unique opportunity to run into in at the Specialty.  She was very sweet and her handler was more than accomodating for a photo shoot.  It's amazing how snotty some of those people were, total a-holes!  Any way, these rare Newfs are fun to see when you can.  I guess this solves my own mystery.

I have seen a Gray Newf.  My husband and I went to a few dog shows recently, we live in the Detroit area. The only one we've seen around here and at the shows  is a big greay male, named Jake. He's a champion and is absolutely gorgeous. He is a big boy, and his owner always has a big brown bib on him for the drool. Its very cute. I know that he was recently bred, to a Newf breeder here and if you check out their website they have pictures of Jake and the new puppies.  I think there was 4 gray puppies out of the litter, mom being black. The breeder is Allegiance Newfoundlands.  When the grays are placed next to the black puppies you can really tell just how silver they are. They are so cute! :)
