Adopting a 5 yr old. . . advice?

Hi everyone:
I'm thinking about adopting a 5 yr old non-neutered male Newf.  I've never had a Newf, and have a couple of other dogs (both pretty laid-back dogs).  Any advice?  I don't really know anything about this dog's background because it's a rescue dog.  Any thoughts on adopting an adult?
