I got to the crying part at work while on lunch.  Yeah, I totally cried at work too. :'(  You might be ok with the first half of the book at work.  Never read Red Fern so I can't compare those two.

The crying part is the last two chapters.  Just don't read the end at work!  Of course, you be laughing like a crazy person, snorting, giggling, tears rolling down cheeks in the first part of the book.  If that's okay at work, you'll be fine!  ;D ;D ;D

I haven't read where the Red Fern Grows either....and DON'T want to!!!!

If WTRFG is 10 on the scale, then Marley will put you at a 9.

Beware.  Have plenty of tissue.  Do NOT read in bed as I did.  I soaked a whole pillowcase and had to get up and find a dry one at 1:30 am.

Also, I recommend stopping at about page 260, and getting a nice, cold washcloth ready; you will need it for your swollen eyes.

If you're reading it in sections, I recommend putting one of those gel eye cooler things in the freezer before you start.

My heart is almost recovered enough from being broken to start re-reading...

I started the book last night, laughed myself to tears til 2 am, was almost late for work this morning.  I work as a home health nurse and reas some between patients.  It is almost 7pm here now and I will definately finish it tonite.  I can almost guess how it ends, and the tears are ready.  My newf of 14 years (Hightower) passed on 2 years ago and I STILL cry thinking of what a wonderful member of my family he was.  It seems sacriligious to say he was my child........ but he was in so many ways.   I still grieve for him.  I have Webster now, who is sooooooooooo unlike Hightower, and that is how it should be.  Someone on here once grumped at me for comparing Hightower and Webster, but I don't expect them to be alike.  There will NEVER be another Hightower in my life.     But when all is said and done, there will never be another Webster either.  The little bloke has stolen my heart already.   The book is a definate MUST READ for anyone who loves dogs the way folks on here seem to love dogs/

Oh I'm reading at work right now and I am on page 218 could easily finish it at work today (I run 2 computer labs at a high school and as long as they are up and running I get to read).  But I think I will quit around 250 until I get home!

OK I finished the book this morning - and as everyone else did - I cried I remembered my baby Stoli the springer spaniel and having to put her down.  And beastly Harley was lying on the couch right next to me on cue putting his head in my lap - I was looking at him adoringly thinking what an angel (not) he knows how upset I am..blah blah blah actually he was stealing my used tissues and eating them.  Harley is 4 years old but I know one day I will look at him and he will be grayer and slower and then he too will be a good dog - right now he is still our naughty boy!!!
