My Dogs Paws Slip on Hard Floors

What can I put on my dogs paws?

Question Comment 1: I have a 13 yr old dog who is having a harder and harder time getting up off the floor. I am working with his vet on his Rimadyl dosage but I want to try other methods too -- maybe then I can stay at the lower level of Rimadyl. My dog is stuck on floors that are hardwood and tile but I have close to a dozen scatter rugs including a 5' x 8' oriental carpet. The scatter rugs only help a little bit because he inevitably finds the 2-foot spot between the rugs, slides down, somehow gets his feet under the rugs (including the carpet!), then can't get up, and looks at me not understanding why he can't get up. A sling is not an option at this point - he still has spunk and fights me on the sling. He really wants to do things himself. A few years ago someone posted about a substance you can rub on their paws to prevent slipping - I recall it being something that show people use to ensure traction on the show floor. Does anyone know what this stuff is and where you can get it? Or... any other suggestions like booties that might have traction?

Paw Wax

Comment 2: You can try 'Shaw's Paw Wax' - just do a search on line to see where to get it. Year's ago they made a substance called 'Tacky Paw' but don't think they do anymore. I did use Shaw's Paw Wax and it didn't help Luc much on tile floors, so don't know if this will help solve your problem. Another option, which is what I did for Orsa who had the same issue, was to buy rubberized entry mats or bath mats and put them throughout the house wherever the floor was slippery. They are functional, even though they're not very pretty, they were for Orsa, not me. Now that she's gone, so are the mats. :-(

Dog Booties

Comment 3: There was company in Canada making nonslippery booties for sledge dogs and gundogs for running on ice, I've bought a pair of ordinary sledge dogs XXL booties once from them when my Newf had a paw injury and these were fantastic booties as they were designed for actually working dogs, were light, comfy and did not come off. All other numerous booties I bought before I found these were just an expencive joke. I have lost link to their website, have a search on web or contact sledge dogs or gundogs/hunting dogs lists and ask where they are buying their booties from.

Dog Paw Wax Information

Comment 4: There's also something called Excel Paw Wax, which I found at PetSmart.  I didn't think it helped all  hat much, but your mileage may vary, as they say....
