Can Puppies Swim in Fresh Water?
Swamp Cancer
Question Comment 1:
I just got some shocking photos sent to me by a fellow dog breeder. One of her puppy buyers let her dog swim in a lake here in Florida and the dogs came down with Swamp Cancer. Have any of you heard of this? The dog had to be put to sleep and the disease was devastatingly disfiguring. I have always told my buyers "No fresh water in Florida" and I am glad I have. Any info would be greatly appreciated. They photos make you nauseous!
Information
Comment 2: What’s really scary is that this disease has been reported not just in Florida but in other areas of the country as far north as Illinois and New Jersey(but it’s predominantly along the Gulf Coast). In other sites I’ve looked at it seems anti-fungals aren’t effective. Apparently it affects horses too. Given our dogs’ love of water this is awful. We’re currently newf-less but when we do get our puppy we’ll just stick to the ocean….
